Family and Background
I spent my early years in a suburb of NY, but VA has been my home most of my life. In fact, even when we lived in NY, vacations were spent camping on the Eastern Shore. Eventually, we moved down to the area, and my parents, sister and I lived in Williamsburg. I stayed in-state for college and grad school, earning my BA at Washington & Lee University and my MBA at The College of William & Mary. The latter is where I met my future wife. Sally was in her senior year of college then and we both were working at a tavern in Colonial Williamsburg to earn some money while we were in school. We later married, moved to Onancock and had two children, Jack and Annie, both of whom are in college now.
What inspired you to pursue the career you have now?
I’ve always been interested in opportunities to make a positive impact in my community. During grad school, I got very involved with Special Olympics as a volunteer. Then, after graduating, the nonprofit offered me a position, giving me the opportunity to turn my personal passion into a professional focus. I left when Sally and I decided we wanted to relocate to the Eastern Shore. I’ve been in banking ever since. It offers me the opportunity to get to know the community, work with business owners and to support their needs as they seek to serve residents here.
How do you define success?
Success for me is about feeling fulfilled in life: being married to my best friend, knowing our kids are both thriving, having close friends and family and working for a company that enables me to make a career out of supporting the community in which we live and work.
What is the best piece of professional advice you've received?
My father once taught me that I should always further my education in life because it would open the door for career opportunities, but common sense and hard work will lead to success.
What's your favorite feature of the Eastern Shore?
The Eastern Shore is a special place. It’s not commercialized or over-populated like other areas of the country and the environment here is absolutely beautiful. We have the ocean and bay in reach, the most amazing fresh produce and seafood. As special as those are, though, it’s the people who make the difference. It’s nice to be surrounded by people who care deeply about the area and one another.
Just for fun, what's your favorite winter comfort food?
Chili and cornbread
