  1. What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

It’s really not what but who,  Ethel Layton was the person who inspired me to be a banker.  She was a teller when I was just 18 years old working for my family’s business.  I would take the deposits to the bank everyday and she kept pushing me to apply for a teller job.  Later in my career, Ethel became my Head Teller.  She never let me stop learning. She always pushed me to help in other areas of the bank and learn how to do almost all jobs within the banking industry. If it wasn’t for her and a few others in my banking career I would not be where I am today.

  2. How do you define success?

Success is not just about the bottom line although that is very important but there is so much more to being successful.  It’s exceptional customer service, it’s trust, it’s kindness, it’s generosity, it’s treating people with respect, it’s following through, it’s availability, it’s communication and it’s not just “selling” a product it’s really listening to what the customer wants and needs and then offering the best product to meet those needs.

  3. What is the best piece of advice you have been given or the best piece of advice for someone?

My grandfather once told me to have a successful business, you have to be present you cannot depend on someone else to make your business a success, so love what you do and show up every day.  He had a successful business, worked until he was 93, and showed up every day.  What better role model is there than that.

  4. Favorite feature of the Eastern Shore of Virginia?

The sense of community and family and slower pace of life.  I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

  5. Favorite Breakfast?

    Sausage & Cheese English Muffin
